The Internet - The New Music University

After almost 15 years of electronic music, sequenced playback, clicktracks and everything associated with automated sound, finally, live music is making a comeback. The nineties and early noughties have been littered with bands who have had no real musical background, who used sequencers and samplers to compose their music. Somewhat difficult to perform live, these bands have totally relied on computers to playback their music!

More and more people are taking to the new global university known as the internet to learn their craft. Namely the playing of a musical instrument. There are hundreds of sites offering services to play the piano, learn how to drum, woodwind instruments and learn guitar online. They come in a variety of formats, catering for those who wish to interact with the internet via their computer or shipped dvds. With websites such as youtube, it has now become possible for anybody to learn any of their favourite songs, by following the online training demonstrated in millions of videos.

Google, Yahoo and all the other search engines show an upturn in search terms for people who wish to learn any aspect of playing a live instrument. For purist music lovers, this has to be a good thing. There really is no substitute for a live band over a recorded song and a singer miming! Anybody who has seen a live pop concert will know the difference when they hear recorded click-tracks and a good old fashioned live band. Surprisingly, some of the more common search terms relating to music are coming from places like Nepal and the Philippines, in amongst the top countries just entering the keyword 'guitar'! Even more surprisingly is that Brazil is the number one country searching for 'guitar online'.

Alexa, the main site showing popularity for websites also points to many musical orientated sites breaking into the top 100,000. Considering there are billions of domains all over the world, this shows a growing trend which can only be applauded. Most of the new music sites relate to actual teaching sites, a few related to the selling of equipment and music software and some relating to reviews of products and services.

Many of the guitar and piano training sites are paid services, with a few free ones scattered about. Obviously content is something very important for aspiring musicians so it is best to make sure the site has a good reputation. For the free ones, the content tends to be somewhat limited, but still worth a look - after all, people like free stuff don't they.

With the rise in search terms related to music, comes the rise in competition for the business associated with them. Luckily, long established sites selling music equipment are around offering very competitive rates including delivery, for a wide variety of different musical tastes.

One of the upshots of technology for live music, is the availability and ease of use for home recording. So not only can anybody learn a musical instrument online now, they can download software to record and write their own music. A composers dream! Previously, this technology was used mainly by elctronic bands and composers, but now hard disk recording is a piece of cake. Meaning live music can be recorded straight onto a hard drive and played back as a dubbed track.

In years gone by, learning to play an instrument was a hard long-winded process, but now with the wonderful internet, all that has become a bit of a breeze. The only thing to worry about, is what song to learn! So wherever you live, so long as you have a computer, you can log onto your own personal university and start learning how to play.
