The Key to Social Media Success - Traditional Media!

The first reason is that the media communicates with people when they are in an open and receptive frame of mind. The second is that the media offers the validation and credibility of being the news and establishes people as experts in their field.

According to a recent study, the major TV outlets have a combined audience (in the US alone) of over 85,000,000 viewers daily. The media still pulls impressive numbers, but, according to Anthony Mora, author of Spin to Win" and president and CEO of Anthony Mora Communications, Inc., a Los Angeles-based PR firm, there are two primary reasons why the traditional media remain the most important marketing tool on the planet. According to Anthony, the first reason is that the media communicates with people when they are in an open and receptive frame of mind. The second is that the media offers the validation and credibility of being the news and establishes people as experts in their field.
"People watch TV, listen to the radio, read the newspaper," Anthony explains. "They are receptive, open and generally relaxed when taking in information that the media delivers. Unlike the internet, which often involves both action and reaction (a two-way form of communication), with traditional media, consumers passively absorb information while sitting in their kitchen, riding in their car, or working out at the gym."
Although the internet can be used as a tool for accessing traditional media, more and more it is a medium that requires action and participation. It is a two-way street; people access it to transmit as much as they do to receive information. Users connect, focus, act and react. Unlike TV or a print publication, the net offers a different form of communication which requires a distinct type of focus and attention.
"The traditional media was designed specifically to deliver information," Anthony continues. "The media transmits and the public receives. The traditional media formats are familiar, the sounds are established, and the information carries the stamp of credibility."
Taking it a step further, according to Anthony, it's not that mainstream media still matters in the age of blogging and social media; it's that mainstream media matters even more. Why? "Just check out blogs and social media sites and see what they're generally talking about," says Anthony. "Bloggers are blogging about a newspaper article that is relevant to what they write about. Facebook and Twitter explode whenever a story breaks on TV. The mainstream media gives the story credence and validation and then the bloggers and social media sites pass the information along, or discuss it, agree, disagree, analyze, etc. That is why getting a story into the press is so vitally important and why traditional media remains the most powerful marketing tool."
