The Paintings of Ferdinand S. Mayer On The Occasion of the 90th Anniversary of the Artist's Birth

The paintings of Ferdinand S. Mayer, from the artist's original photographs, released for the first time over 40 years following his death.

On a sunny day in the mid-1960's, Ferd Mayer brought his paintings out to the back yard of our home in Brooklyn, New York. One by one, he hung them on the brick wall covered by a black cloth and took slide photographs of them for presentation at an art class. This event was only slightly unusual. Our father was often working on his paintings, either in his basement studio or at his Tuesday evening art classes at The Brooklyn Museum of Art. A few short years later, Ferd Mayer suddenly grew ill and died.

Over forty years following his death, some ninety years after his birth, these paintings are seen for the first time in their original form, reproduced from the slides our father took on that sunny day in Brooklyn.

Nothing was done to embellish these images. They appear just as they were four and a half decades ago. In some cases, the paintings may appear slightly distorted by the angle of the original photo. In one photograph, the brickwork of our family home can be seen just to the left of the painting. That is just as our father would have wanted it.
