The Parking Spot Launches New Austin-Bergstrom International Airport Parking Facility

Second Austin facility features sustainable design as Parksmart Demonstrator Site

The Parking Spot, the nation’s largest owner and operator of near-airport parking properties, will open a new Austin facility on Thursday, February 16. Located at 2935 East State Highway 71, the new facility includes 1,589 canopy-covered spaces. As The Parking Spot’s second facility in the Austin market, the new facility will expand the company’s presence and provide a more convenient parking option for customers who arrive from the east side of the airport.

The location features a forward-looking, sustainable surface parking design, which helped qualify it to be designated as a Demonstrator Site for Parksmart, the sustainable parking certification of Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI). As the global green business and sustainability certification and credentialing body for the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) designation and other green business programs, GBCI designates Demonstrator Sites to recognize sustainability-related best practices in surface lot design.

“We’re proud to be setting an industry-wide standard for sustainable parking design,” said Kevin Shrier, president and chief executive officer of The Parking Spot. “As we continue to grow in Texas, we’re excited to offer our guests additional parking options that were designed with sustainability in mind.”

The Parking Spot completed extensive research and planning to produce a creative solution for land that was previously developed as a commercial concrete plant. Development plans for the new facility included the reuse of old spoil piles and concrete slabs found above and below ground to minimize transportation of material to and from the construction site. In addition, “heritage” oak trees, designated as such based on their age, rarity, and size, as well as for their aesthetic, ecological, and historic value, were preserved on-site after a thorough tree survey that was completed and approved by the City of Austin. Greater than half of the overall site will remain as green space, either undeveloped or through developed landscaping.

Other features of the sustainable design include 100 percent LED lighting, canopies with high solar reflectance index (SRI) coating, electrical vehicle (EV) charging stations, and natural filtration of stormwater runoff.

The new location is adding 30 jobs to the market, bringing The Parking Spot’s total employment in Austin to 75 jobs. For more information on the new Austin facility opening, please visit The Parking Spot’s website.
