The Sanders Firm Announces Scholarship Winner

The Sanders Firm honors a student dedicated to improving the lives of high-risk teens.

The Sanders Firm is pleased to announce the winner of their first ever scholarship award. Janice Tang has been awarded $1,000 for her impressive dedication to furthering the education of underserved and high-risk children in southern California. Ms. Tang will begin her first year at the University of San Diego School of Law this fall and will remain dedicated to advocate on behalf of young people throughout her area.

The Sanders Firm Scholarship was created to support undergraduate and law school students who demonstrate an abiding, meaningful commitment to improving their local communities. Candidates are those who are accepted or enrolled in a four-year college or university program, or accepted or enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school. Scholarship candidates must also demonstrate that they have maintained minimum academic standards and they are asked to submit a 1,500 to 2,000 word essay that describes their efforts toward bettering their communities.

Scholarship winner works with at-risk youth

The field of candidates for the 2015 scholarship was incredibly competitive. The Sanders Firm would like to congratulate Ms. Tang on her award-winning essay, which explores her many years of service to at-risk youth in California. Ms. Tang has been passionate about volunteering since she was 13 years-old, working toward making a positive difference in her community by improving educational opportunities. She recognized that education is the bridge to overcoming socio-economic challenges and that language barriers in particular often hinder immigrant youth. Since Ms. Tang speaks English, Vietnamese, and Cantonese fluently, she was able to provide personalized tutoring for children in multiple subject areas.

Because of her dedication to building personal relationships with her pupils, Ms. Tang soon learned of their socio-economic challenges. In addition to helping her pupils improve their literacy skills, Ms. Tang worked to enhance their access to mental health services, bolster their self-confidence, and encourage them to reach for their lifelong goals.

Ms. Tang has demonstrated a keen understanding of the challenges that face high-risk populations. Beyond tutoring area youth, she has also volunteered for the San Diego Juvenile Court. In this capacity, Ms. Tang coordinated college and career events for youth in foster care. She draws on her background of the child of immigrants to empathize with San Diego refugees and other immigrants in their struggle to access basic care services. Ms. Tang has personally helped more than 150 students apply for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and she volunteers for the Dreamers Assistance Network.
