Online, February 11, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Rancho Mirage CA February 3, 2010 - 'To know me is to fly with me', goes Clooney playing Ryan Bigham in his latest film 'Up in the Air'. Bigham is a roadie who travels from state to state firing people (its his job and needs a personal approach). Supposedly, 320 days on the road, Bigham is 'home' only 40 days a year, which of course is a shared hotel suite in Omaha.

Besides his everyday routine; flying, cheap sushi at airports and giving people 'the boot' (which has made him a cynic that you would love to hate) his personal ambition is to achieve a very hefty target of collecting 10 Million AA air miles earning him the exclusive membership with all the perks. The movie is quite entertaining even though with all the annoying product placements.

Besides entertainment, this movie also gives us, roadies or not, an insight into the lives of the people who really live off these air miles. Bigham claims in the movie that while on the road he does not spend a dime on anything unless it is to profit his air mileage. Lunch, shopping, room service anything not paid for by the company, he cashes in his air miles.

They are like gold. But better. They don't lose or gain their value. Just keep racking them up and cut in line everywhere you go.

But as the movie unfolds and Bigham realizes that his choice of lifestyle is being challenged, he blows up, in a way. This shows that this lifestyle can be addictive to detached people, which of course is not a good thing. It is just like having a life in those virtual environments like Second Life etc where you get to be anyone you want and can start from a clean slate whenever you feel like it by just hitting the reset button. Nonetheless the film is a good watch.

Now about the exclusive club.

Is it a myth or does it really exist? Officials have claimed that it does but is kept a secret only open to invitation. Air mile junkies also exist, but would prefer to be called 'globetrotters'. Enjoying on the free perks, not spending a dime and visiting countries but not really getting out of the airport. It has got quite a surreal approach to it but many would consider this an illusion rather than a lifestyle. Depends on whom you ask.
