The SEFA Group Announces Recycling Milestone

Over 3.5 Million Tons of Harvested Coal Ash Have Been Recycled in Concrete

The SEFA Group is pleased to announce a new milestone in the recycling of over 3.5 million tons of harvested coal ash. The successful recycling of coal ash from ponds to beneficial recycled use in concrete and other industrial applications involves partnerships among utilities, technologies, and concrete producers. At multiple facilities, ash is processed using STAR® Technology, SEFA's proprietary process. The coal ash is converted into high-quality, specification-grade fly ash through the STAR process, and SEFA then sells this material to concrete producers for recycling into highway and construction projects.

Bill Fedorka, VP of CCP Services at SEFA, said, "We embarked on modifying STAR Technology six years ago in order to process legacy ash from ponds. It's very rewarding to be part of a team that continues to lead in the development of beneficiation technologies."

SEFA was the first company in the world processing harvested ash in commercial quantities with STAR Technology, beginning in 2015. Material which has been excavated from ponds or landfills is transformed to provide a reliable raw material that meets or exceeds all specifications for additives in concrete. It is then recycled into the construction of roads, bridges, dams, and buildings, improving their strength and durability.

"By processing reclaimed coal ash, we are able to give our concrete customers a consistent supply of quality fly ash," added Jim Clayton, COO. "It's our privilege to work with utility and concrete partners in the recycling of harvested coal ash."
