The Shifting Landscape of Entrepreneurship, According to CEO Brandon Frere

Shifting Sands

The well-worn definition of entrepreneurship is of a single individual boldly leading an organization toward new markets. But as the business landscape is shifted by technology, the definition has evolved, at least according to one industry leader. A recent article in Entrepreneur discusses how the entrepreneurial spirit needs to be integrated throughout the organization, encouraging enthusiasm, vision and problem-solving. Organizational optimization from a bottom-up culture shift is exactly what entrepreneur and CEO Brandon Frere strives for in all of his ventures.

“Every single member of our staff in all of our ventures needs to be ready to be pushed and challenged every day. I want them to love coming to work and I want them to grow and learn every day,” said Frere. “We need to make something work, then polish it, shine it, make it better. Then make it even better.”

Every single member of our staff in all of our ventures needs to be ready to be pushed and challenged every day. I want them to love coming to work and I want them to grow and learn every day. We need to make something work, then polish it, shine it, make it better. Then make it even better.

The first element of the entrepreneurial shift is that every employee is an entrepreneur, meaning each staff member is responsible for creating, communicating and delivering value to customers. In addition, every member of the staff is responsible for pipeline, the business of turning leads into customers, narrowing efforts on results instead of lead generation.

Another element is to encourage innovation by embracing, inspiring and being willing to pay for innovative thinking. An excellent example is the “skunk-work projects” of 3M that gave its researchers 15 percent of their time to work on independent, unapproved ideas. One of the biggest home runs of this approach was the late 1970s rollout of Post-it Notes, which matched one engineer’s rejected glue with another engineer’s desire to mark his place in his hymnal.

Competition is also supported, allowing team members to push each other to be more productive and innovative. Competing to come up with the next amazing thing to showcase products and messaging creates better products and services.

Entrepreneurship can be developed, but hiring individuals who already have it is also advisable. It is important to hire those who want to learn, experiment, apply, share and partner, and are open to experiences instead of having very specific goals.

“I believe that entrepreneurship is a mindset and that our entire organization needs to be open to the next great idea and how to implement it. Having our whole team dynamically adding value to customers’ lives is why we are here,” said Frere. “And to have fun doing it.”

About Frere Enterprises
Brandon Frere is an entrepreneur and businessman who lives in Sonoma County, California. He has designed and created multiple companies to meet the ever-demanding needs of businesses and consumers alike. His company website, www.FrereEnterprises.com, is used as a means to communicate many of the lessons, fundamentals and information he has learned throughout his extensive business and personal endeavors, most recently in advocating on behalf of student loan borrowers nationwide.

As experienced during his own student loan repayment, Mr. Frere found out how difficult it can be to work with federally contracted student loan servicers and the repayment programs designed to help borrowers. Through those efforts, he gained an insider’s look into the repayment process and the motivations behind the inflating student loan debt bubble. His knowledge of the confusing landscape of student loan repayment became a vital theme in his future endeavors, and he now uses those experiences to help guide others through the daunting process of applying for available federal repayment and loan forgiveness programs.
