The UK's Most (And Least) Eco-Friendly Regions Revealed
Companies in South West England are the most supportive in the UK of workplace eco-initiatives - whereas those in the North West are the least, according to the most recent survey by www.euroffice.co.uk, the UK's leading online office supplier.
Online, February 22, 2011 (Newswire.com) - Ninety-five percent of those in the South West described themselves as supportive of office environmental measures, as opposed to just 73% in the North West. Surprisingly, London office workers were amongst the least eco-friendly with only 76% describing themselves as being on side.
But whilst many were supportive, in practice few were putting the good intentions into effect. UK-wide, few businesses appeared to be using energy saving schemes or encouraging staff to travel in a greener manner. Nationally just over a quarter said their firm was involved in energy savings schemes, and only 20% said their employer encouraged them to use more environmentally-friendly means of transport.
Indeed more than half the survey respondents said they travelled to work by car, whereas only 15% said they used public transport. Just a single respondent said they carpooled with a colleague to travel to work.
It appears that men could do the most to pull their eco-socks up when it comes to everyday tasks, with only 64% saying they always recycle - compared to almost three quarters of women. Overall, a fifth of those who answered the survey admitted they only recycled office supplies once a week - and just 70% every day.
"While many managers and staff like the idea of being green, it appears they may not be that diligent about putting words into action," said Simon Drakeford, CEO of Euroffice. "Even the most basic things like energy-saving lightbulbs, ensuring PCs are switched off at night and taking public transport, all have their role to play in reducing carbon emissions."
The survey of 223 businesses throughout the UK took place before Christmas.
