The Zebra Introduces In-Car Selfie Prevention Alarm

Nation's largest car insurance comparison marketplace launches IoT-connected vanity-monitoring technology to combat disturbing selfie trend among drivers

The Zebra today introduced a new product designed to detect and curb vanity, mitigate selfie-taking, and make the roads altogether safer. The In-Car Selfie Prevention Alarm, or ICSPA, employs connected technology which monitors for high levels of vanity within a vehicle and employs a “kill switch” on smartphones if narcissism reaches peak levels. Drivers then have to humble themselves to regain control of their cars.

Earlier this year, The Zebra announced its Series A funding round, and is now executing on its mission to become the Uber-meets-Netflix-meets-Snapchat-meets-Zenefits (with proper compliance) of car insurance. The Zebra will use the funding to produce millions of ICSPAs for cars nationwide, and will provide ICSPAs free of charge to drivers who find their car insurance through TheZebra.com.

The In-Car Selfie Prevention Alarm employs connected technology which monitors for high levels of vanity within a vehicle and employs a "kill switch" on smartphones if narcissism reaches peak levels.

The ICSPA can count how often drivers check themselves out in the rearview mirror, how many photos are in their smart phones’ selfie albums, and even how many cosmetic products are in the vicinity. Through Internet of Things (IoT) technology, the ICSPA assesses this in-vehicle vanity data and can shut down smartphones if narcissism exceeds a safe threshold. Drivers have to humble themselves to re-engage the engine, but continued monitoring may activate safe braking and parking if the driver becomes too self-enamored while operating the vehicle.

“We created ICSPA to help keep drivers’ eyes on the roads -- not on their reflections,” said Adam Lyons, CEO for The Zebra. “I’ve caught my own eye in the rearview mirror and maybe taken a selfie or two more than I’d care to admit, but now I have ICSPA to help keep me honest. Sometimes we need that little reminder to make smart and safe choices.”

April begins Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and The Zebra wants drivers to be aware of the dangers of in-car vanity. Whether using a selfie stick, holding a smartphone, or posing as a friend snaps a photo, it’s never safe for drivers to take their eyes off the road.

*Pre-orders start on April 1. Visit www.TheZebra.com/ICSPA for more information.
