A top softball peak performance coach reveals what he calls, "the hierarchy of needs for more effective softball drills."
Montreal, Canada-based softball coach Marc Dagenais says that softball players need three things to make their drills more effective: the food that they eat, rest, and exercise.
"I noticed that most players - especially beginners - typically lack the energy to perform the drills that I require them to do," says Dagenais. He explains that that is the reason why he came up with the "hierarchy of needs".
Dagenais says that food should always be on the top of the list. "That's where players get the energy for everything that they do, be it performing drills or being more active in school or at home." He says that softball players should target foods rich in carbohydrates, protein, and calcium, as these help boost their energy while speeding up their body's recovery after training.
As for rest, the well-known softball coach tells players to have lots of it. "Without rest, your body will find it difficult to recover quickly from games, training, and the various softball drills that you do." Unfortunately, he says, most players don't do this. "They instead opt to get back on the field immediately, which does more harm than good."
"Players need to exercise too to build up their body's strength and endurance," Dagenais says. According to him, a stronger body helps players keep up with the demanding pace of competitions during the season. Aside from that, "a stronger body keeps players well-protected against overuse and other types of softball-related injuries."
Dagenais is a softball coach with more than 20 years of coaching teams that include the Canadian Women's Softball National Team.
