TOP TORONTO JAZZ ARTIST TO PERFORM AT PEACE THEATRE FUNDRAISER

TORONTO, ON- April 19, 2010: Musical duo and esteemed fixture on the Canadian jazz scene, Joe Sealy & Paul Novotny have signed on to headline the Mad Hatter's Tea Party; Peace Theatre's 10th Un-Anniversary fundraiser.

Friends and business partners for almost a quarter of a century, Joe Sealy & Paul Novotny have co-owned their own jazz record label, Seajam Recordings and consistently deliver high-quality, award-winning music that is known and respected throughout the world. Their elegant combination of deep bass lines, vigorous harmonies and strong rhythms has earned them three Juno nominations and one win.

Though their musical history is intertwined both are well respected and accomplished artists as individuals.

Multi-talented Joe Sealy is a musician, actor, composer, music director and arranger as well as an award winner, having won a Juno Award for Best Canadian Contemporary Jazz Album for the critically acclaimed Africville Suite the SOCAN Award for Best Original Jazz Composition. In addition, he has just recently been awarded The Order of Canada.

Paul Novotny, a composer, producer and jazz bassist, has the fantastic ability to compose in a wide array of musical styles as illustrated in his fully orchestrated theme for CBC The National and commercials for Suzuki, Simmons, Humpty Dumpty, The Bay and The CN Tower.

The duo is thrilled to lend their time and talents to the effort to save the Peace Theatre. When asked why they got involved in this particular initiative they were quick to note the importance of making art available and accessible to children. "We feel that the cause of "Children and the Arts" resonates most deeply for us. If Children are encouraged to be creative at an early age, they grow up to more complete adults. Art instills confidence, and specifically, music encourages group participation. These are important values that all children deserve to experience".

Monsoon (www.monsoon-music.com), an Indo-Jazz ensemble that fuses contemporary jazz with Indian classical music will open for Joe and Paul. This group of highly accomplished musicians bring together their diverse musical backgrounds and strong musicality to create a powerful and fresh approach to world music and the blending of eastern and western music traditions.

Fundraiser tickets can be purchased at www.peacetheatre.org or by phone at 416-752-1550.

ABOUT PEACE THEATRE
Alice laughed. "There's no use trying,"
she said: "one can't believe impossible things." I daresay you haven't had much
practice," said the Queen. "When I was
your age, I always did it for half-an-hour
a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as
many as six impossible things before breakfast." (Through the Looking Glass)

At Peace Theatre, we do just that. We inspire children to dream impossible things; to discover that Peace is possible when we face conflict with compassion and creativity. Just like Alice did in Wonderland, at the Peace Theatre young people begin to come to terms with the arbitrary, violent, sometimes nonsensical and unjust world they live in, and develop the tools they need to live and create peace in their lives, their communities and beyond.

Housed in the historic Masseyâ€Goulding Estate, in the stunning, natural ravine setting of Taylorâ€Massey Creek Park in east end Toronto, Peace Theatre is a one of a kind, award-winning community arts organization with a unique methodology, blending theatre arts with social activism to empower at risk children and youth to share their stories of conflict and their visions of peace.
