Track Resurfacing Completed at McGhees' Mile in Aiken, S.C.
Aiken, S.C. (Jan. 22, 2010) - Track resurfacing at McGhees' Mile is complete and winter standardbred training is in progress.
The facility's mile- and half-mile clay tracks and 7/8-mille sand track were resurfaced in recent months to provide patrons an even better training experience. Stall and paddock rentals also remain available.
"These tracks have never looked so good," McGhees' Mile Owner Bruce McGhee said.
Horses are being trained at McGhees' most days between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. and the public is welcome to come watch.
Originally known as the Aiken Mile Track, legendary horseman Dunbar Bostwick constructed what is today known as McGhees' Mile Standardbred Training Center in 1936. The track has been home to some of the sport's most acclaimed horses, including Greyhound, Rodney and American Winner. Industry experts agree more champion horses have trained in Aiken than any other winter training ground in America. Among current champion trainers at McGhees' is Jimmy Larente, a Montreal native who trained Scully, the World Champion Double-Gaited Horse; Mr. Wright, the Horse of the Year in 1978; and Idle Love, the World Champion 4-year-old Trotter in 1979, among others.
