Transforming Grief: A Cancer Spouse Turns Sadness Into Community With The Launch Of Ali's Alliance

Michele Rosenthal hosts 'Your Life After Trauma' this week with guests weighing in on what it's like to lose someone and how to deal with that loss. One man hopes to help others with his experience.

When his wife died of cancer David Cowan didn't know what to do. In order to subvert his grief he decided to launch an organization to support cancer victims. What he discovered is that it also helps support him as he processes through the grief of his loss. Next on 'Your Life After Trauma' we will feature Anthony Gonzalez (Grief Counselor at Hospice of Palm Beach County) & David J Cowan, Sr., who will be sharing about how to cope with and process grief. The show airs Thursday, September 22nd at 7pm EST, on Seaview Radio (95.9AM/106.9FM/960AM) and streams online at www.healmyptsd.com/your-life-after-trauma. Call in with your questions: 877.960.9960.

According to Michele Rosenthal, host of 'Your Life After Trauma', "Grief can lead to numbness and inertia, two of the things that block us from moving forward. What we learn from grief counseling and others' examples of moving ahead is that taking action helps put us back in touch with life in a meaningful way. Add to that the beauty of giving back and helping others and you have a terrific recipe for learning how to process grief and move on."

'Your Life After Trauma' brings weekly support and information to trauma survivors, plus their caregivers and healing professionals on Thursday nights from 7-8pm EST, on Seaview Radio (95.9AM/106.9FM/960AM) in southeast Florida (and streaming live online) (http://www.healmyptsd.com/your-life-after-trauma). Your Life After Trauma provides resources, inspiration, hope and specific actions to help anyone learn to formulate a recovery plan, access healing potential and apply personal strengths to post-trauma recovery.

This week's guests will be:

David J Cowan Sr. has been in Florida 14 years and a resident of Jupiter for the past 12. Born in Upstate New York, David grew up mainly in North Carolina and Colorado. David earned an Honorable Discharge from the United States Marine Corps 1979 and a Bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado in 1988. Since moving to Florida he has been a scuba diving instructor, a dive travel guide and underwater videographer. After completing Film School in 2009 David launched his video production company, Palm Beach Video, serving small to medium sized businesses throughout the South East.

In January of 2010 David's lovely wife Alison was diagnosed with Mucosal Melanoma, a very rare internal variation of the deadly skin cancer, and in December of 2010 Alison passed after a courageous eleven month battle. The shock of Alison's passing and the difficulty of finding resources during the battle formed the genesis of Ali's Alliance, a Florida Non-Profit dedicated to the creation and maintenance of a geographically searchable online database of resources to support cancer survivors, family members and caregivers.

Anthony Gonzalez joined Hospice of Palm Beach County in early 2010 as a bereavement counselor and was quickly promoted to Counseling Resource Leader. In this role, Anthony provides clinical oversight of bereavement programs as well as counseling services to individuals and families. Skilled in providing group and individual therapy to children and adults, including crisis intervention and medical social work, Anthony has helped countless families cope with grief.

Prior to joining Hospice of Palm Beach County, Anthony served as the Social and Spiritual Care Supervisor with Circle of Life Hospice in Springdale, AR and also as a Bereavement Coordinator at St. Tammany Parish Hospital Hospice in Mandeville, LA. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Human Development and Family Life at the University of Kansas and his Masters in Social Work at the University of Kansas.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder is a wholly treatable condition that results from a life-threatening experience in which the trauma survivor felt helpless. PTSD symptoms include insomnia, nightmares, flashbacks, emotional numbing, hyperarousal and hypervigilance.
