Transmedia "Looking Past Seeing Through" Features Paintings From The San Francisco Renaissance
Online, May 19, 2011 (Newswire.com) - A new exhibit at Mythos Fine Art Gallery samples work from painters active during the 50s and 60s, known as the San Francisco Renaissance, when a burgeoning poetry scene broadened into a community of painters, avant-garde filmmakers, collagists, and musicians. The dynamics of this period have had a great impact on modern literature, music, and culture, and Looking Past Seeing Through features original works by many of the time's most influential artists: Robert Duncan, Madeline Gleason, Paul Alexander, Lawrence Jordan, and current SF Poet Laureate Diane Di Prima, amongst others.
Lilly Fenichel, Harry Jacobus, and Jess all studied at the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute) in its illustrious years 1949-1951 when teachers, such as Clyfford Still, Edward Corbett, and Hassel Smith encouraged students to explore color and form as their inspiration dictated, rather than to paint in a particular style. This methodology permeated the Renaissance and made possible not only the many artistic advancements for which it is well known, but also, in part, a revolution in how we perceive the limits of our modern lifestyles.
The exhibit is open now through June 19th, but there are three special events planned in conjunction:
Friday May 27th, 7:00 pm
Readings and discussion, featuring Peter Selz, Joanna McClure, David Meltzer and Frank Cebulski, hosted by David Reid.
