An insider's look at the newspaper industry's decline in a funny work of fiction, "Trashy Chic"

The death of print media can be summed up in one word: Greed and-stupidity.

And, oh yeah, the Internet. How many words is that?

Former reporter Cathy Lubenski survived over 25 years in journalism with her sanity relatively intact. She's written a book, "Trashy Chic" (Vantage Point Press) that wraps up the sad decline of her profession in a funny murder mystery.

Her heroine, Bertie Mallowan, has lost all respect for the people who run newspapers; consequently she's drifted into a back eddy of journalism: Features aimed at women. You know, like new products for the home, fashion, etcetera. She scores an interview with Robert Bellingham, the King of Unnecessarily Expensive Luxury Items (monogrammed airbags for "The Crash with Panache"), and overlooks an overt grope from him to get the interview.

Two days later, he's murdered and Bertie gets a chance to write a page one story. Her original feelings for her profession are reignited - idealism, a chance to change the world - and she's off on a hunt for the murderer, despite the stupidity of editors who are more interested in the Bottom Line than the Big Story.

Will anyone remember what it was like to work for a newspaper in 20 years? 10 years? "Trashy Chic" is both a paean and a poke at a previously noble profession.

New York Times best-selling author T. Jefferson Parker said:
"Don't miss this utterly delightful mystery. Cathy Lubenski has a light but sharp touch, a wonderful eye for human types and human foibles, and she's a natural entertainer. "Trashy Chic" has a perfect humor-to-heart ratio. Bravo!"

The San Diego Union-Tribune:
"Trashy Chic," Cathy Lubenski's debut novel, is a laugh-out-loud romp, with snappy writing and a twisted plot.
