Tree Climbing Reaches New Hights In Dorset

The Great Big Tree Climbing Company has launched a series of Easter events for children in a bid to get them to leave computer games at home and get out in the fresh air.

Tree climbers extraordinaire Mark Hawes and Nick Cranston are urging youngsters to put down their computer games and join them for the challenge of a lifetime.

The men behind The Great Big Tree Climbing Company have joined forces with the National Trust at Kingston Lacy estate near Wimborne for a series of tree climbing events throughout Easter.

Those taking part can climb a 200-year-old 85ft Cedar tree using ropes and harnesses, take a zip wire ride and the leap of faith - swinging Tarzan style between trees.

The events mark the start of a national tree climbing league-table. Those who climb can do so just for fun or can choose to be timed - enabling them to compete in a UK-wide tree-climbing contest.

Mark, who lives in Shaftesbury, said: "Tree climbing is fast becoming the next big thing - it's completely exhilarating and is a great way of spending time outdoors. There's something pretty amazing about climbing such a majestic tree in such beautiful surroundings - the views will be amazing and the physical experience of climbing, swinging and hurtling down on a zip-wire provide a real adrenaline rush.

"We hope families and individuals will take us up on the challenge - it's great for team-building and is a good incentive to put down the computer games and enjoy a physical challenge in the fresh air."

The experience, which includes safety helmets and harnesses, is open to everyone, including children aged three and over and adults of all ages. Families are welcome to bring a picnic along to enjoy as they watch others climb. Admission to Kingston Lacey park and garden is £6 for adults and £3 for children. A climb, zip wire and big leap costs £12.50 or the big leap only costs £6.
Rain or shine, events take place from 10am till 4pm on March 30 and 31 and April 6, 7, 13 and 14 2010 and there's no need to book ahead.
