Turkish Beaches Ranked 4th In World
Turkey, with its 235 blue flag beaches, was ranked fourth in the world following Spain, Greece and France.
Online, June 22, 2011 (Newswire.com) - The "Clean Environment, Green world, Blue Sea" campaign has been launched with the cooperation of the Turkey Environment Education Association (TÜRÇEV) and the Hurriyet newspaper.
The Blue Flag Programme is owned and run by the non-government, non-profit organization, the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). The campaign is designed to raise environmental awareness and increase good environmental practices among tourists, local populations and beach and marina management and staff. The campaign criteria are also designed to work with the national, regional and local legislation of each country, thereby assuring that the legislation is being followed, or it can be used to set a benchmark higher than what already exists. The Blue Flag is a voluntary eco-label awarded to over 3550 beaches and marinas in 41 countries across Europe, South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada and the Caribbean.
The Blue Flag campaign started in Europe in 1987 with the purpose of encouraging beaches to comply with the EU Bathing Water Directive. The campaign criteria has since developed to address a wide range of issues and the number of participating countries and number of beaches and marinas receiving the award has increased yearly.
There are 27 criteria for blue flag beaches and some 22 criteria for blue flag marinas. The Blue Flag is given to beaches and marinas that meet a specific set of criteria concerning environmental information and education, water quality, safety and services and environmental management. It has become a symbol of quality recognized by tourists and tour operators and can be used for the promotion of the awarded beach or marina.
Honourable position, 4th in World Rank, fell to Turkey which acquired 235 Blue Flags. Majority of them was awarded to Antalya province which captured 186 Blue Flags (174 for beaches, 5 for marinas and 7 for yachts).
