UC Irvine Extension Offers Three New Courses for Wine Enthusiasts

Participants Learn the Production and Value in Some of History's Finest Wines

The University of California, Irvine Extension announces three new courses in the Specialized Studies Program in Wine for the fall quarter. Participants will learn about prestigious wines from around the world, enhance their knowledge of wine styles and treatment and develop decision-making skills for pairing wine with food. "Call Me a Cab... or a Merlot" will take place Oct. 11 and 18 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., and "Holiday Pairing of Food and Wine" will be held Nov. 7 and 14 from 7 to 10 p.m. "Intermediate Wine Studies" is a six-week course that will be held every Tuesday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. starting Oct. 25 and concluding Nov. 29. All courses will be held on the University of California, Irvine campus.

"The course instructors in the Specialized Studies Program in Wine are well respected in the wine industry and have extensive knowledge and background of wine history and production," said Kirwan Rockefeller, Ph.D., program director of the University of California, Irvine Extension wine studies program. "Participants this fall will gain a much deeper understanding and appreciation of some of history's finest wines and new ways to use them in their everyday lives."

In "Call Me a Cab... or a Merlot," instructor Marlene Rossman, M.B.A., M.A. will teach participants the history and production of French wines that were, for many years, the most prestigious wines in the world. "Intermediate Wine Studies," taught by Christopher Coon, will allow students to enhance what they learned in "Fundamentals of Wine Studies" by developing their wine-tasting skills, sensory perception, understanding of bottle labeling, knowledge of food and wine pairing, and techniques for proper wine service and storage. In "Holiday Pairing of Food and Wine," instructor Edward Manetta will assist participants in developing decision-making skills of pairing wine with food when served at home or when hosting a party.
