UFS Wins Large Contract To Provide REMEDIATION ENCLOSURE for Platypus Remediation Project
Online, July 25, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Universal Fabric Structures has secured a large contract to design, supply and install the Odour Control Enclosure at the Platypus site located on Sydney Harbour at Neutral Bay, as part of Platypus Stage 2 Major Remediation Works.
The former HMAS Platypus Site is nestled below the suburb of Neutral Bay on a quiet harbor inlet. This site is an integral part of the tapestry of the history of Sydney Harbour since the early 1800's. Historically the site has been home to a gasworks, workshop for servicing torpedoes and base for Australian submarines.
The site has an area of approximately 1.8 hectares and includes 11 buildings and structures, some of which are of heritage significance. The soils, bedrock and groundwater on the site are contaminated, predominantly due to the former gas works operations.
The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust acquired Platypus in 2005, and they are entrusted with the task of protecting the heritage of Sydney Harbour. The aim of this plan, is to provide a framework for the remediation, rehabilitation and adaptive re-use of to the site. The scale and quality of the harbor foreshore at Platypus provides great potential to enrich the civic and cultural life of the city.
Universal Fabric Structures - Director David Gullis "This project has given us the opportunity to work with Thiess Services, the leading and longest serving remediation specialist in Australia, on Platypus Stage 2, providing a UFS Structure that will cover the entire northern section of the Platypus Site."
"This is our largest UFS SUPA-SPAN S structure to date, customised specifically for this project, a combination of steel framing, fabric paneling and a unique proprietary tensioning system. We will complete the installation by mid December 2012, then (approximately 8 - 12 months after erection); the building will be decontaminated, removed and be recycled/redeployed, ensuring a completely holistic approach has been adopted to reuse as much of the structure as possible in the future.
"This contract comes hot on the heels of our recent 'Overall Winner 2012 Award' at the Specialty Textiles Industry Awards in Melbourne and reinforces our belief and commitment to delivering unsurpassed project management expertise and dedication to customer service."
