One of the most technologically focussed international shipping companies, Anglo Pacific International plc, has recently rolled out brand new Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) software "MoveTransfer" across its operation. Retyping, duplication and inevitable errors will now be avoided throughout the end-to-end global business process.

Martin Perry, Anglo Pacific's IT Director, has been championing MoveTransfer's implementation, "The typical international removals business model involves two operating partners; Anglo Pacific takes direct responsibility for the UK end whilst a destination agent handles receipt, customs clearance and delivery at the other. Every time there is a manual data handover there is potential for information to degrade, but with MoveTransfer that risk is reduced. We can now have a greater degree of influence over the processes at the receiving end thousands of miles away and of course it is the customer that benefits with improved service and reliability."

Although fairly straightforward and already used by the supply chains of large corporations, EDI has until now eluded the removals industry. Tony Kent, Director of Moveware, the brains behind MoveTransfer, explains its merits, "In simple terms MoveTransfer allows Moveware partners to electronically exchange manifest and relocatee details directly with each other. Anglo Pacific sends groupage shipments that might contain up to 50 consignments of household effects along with passport copies, customs forms, inventory lists and so on. MoveTransfer will automatically and instantaneously send the information and documents electronically to the receiving agent thus saving time and improving the accuracy. Staff do not have to spend hours manually keying data, with the potential for errors, and can focus more time on the client. MoveTransfer ideally suits companies such as Anglo Pacific who are working in partnership with FIDI agents and competing against some of the large worldwide groups."

Anglo Pacific has branches in London, Manchester and Glasgow, each involved in the packing and shipping household goods overseas. Consignments are logged into MoveTransfer at each branch location then, when goods are shipped, a simple press of a button transfers the details to the appropriate destination partner. Once the system has responded to confirm receipt of data, the destination agent then has all of the paperwork preloaded into their system.

Martin continues, "Currently 80% of all our exports to Australia and New Zealand are transmitted using EDI. Conversely less than half of all imports received by Anglo Pacific use EDI. One problem is the fragmented nature of the market with small- to medium- size enterprises adopting many different business models and computer systems. Together Anglo Pacific, the largest exporter of personal and household effects to Australasia, and Moveware, Australia-based and the market leader for their removal product, were able to reach the necessary tipping point to allow MoveTransfer to make a real impact. We hope that the rest of the industry follows suit."

OSS World Wide Movers is one of Anglo Pacific's destination agents which has been keen to early adopt the technology. Chris Farley, with responsibility for IT at OSS, comments, "Moveware is a fantastic intuitive software system that has been designed by people who understand the moving industry. Since fully incorporating Moveware into our business we have been able to use the system to map our work processes and develop communication flows at each point. Complicated procedural systems with customs and quarantine can now be simplified, monitored and communicated to Anglo Pacific's clients at any point. The client knows what is happening and we can track all communication and paperwork. MoveTransfer has enhanced this further and as soon as we receive notification of a pending waybill, we have access to all the address details of every client in the shipment and it helps us to maintain a competitive partnership and service."

Anglo Pacific is looking forward to continued support and innovation from Moveware providing its customers with the reassurance that their valued goods will arrive safely - even on the other side of the world.
