Ultrapure Water Pharma To Cover Key Water Treatment Topics and Provide Valuable Networking Opportunity

There is still time to register to attend Ultrapure Water Pharma 2010. This year's conference at the in East Brunswick, N.J., will cover key topics tied to pharmaceutical water treatment. The meeting will include 17 papers and a roundtable.

East Brunswick, N.J.--Next week's Ultrapure Water Pharma 2010 conference at the Hilton Hotel here will feature important topics relevant to pharmaceutical water treatment. The conference, slated for Thursday, May 20 and Friday, May 21, will feature 17 technical papers on subjects important to pharmaceutical water treatment, and also feature a roundtable on the state of this water treatment sector.

There is still time to register for Ultrapure Water Pharma, which will also feature tabletop exhibits, and offer attendees the chance to meet and network with others active in pharmaceutical water treatment. Topics to be addressed by the conference will include USP requirements for pharma waters, microbiological control, rouging in pharmaceutical water systems, water system expansion, and distillation. Among the speakers will be Daryl Roll of Astro Pak Corp.; Lee Comb of Aqua-Chem Inc.; Marc Mittelman, Ph.D., of Exponet and Harvard SEAS; and Zahid Amjad, Ph.D., of Walsh University. Conference co-moderators will be Anthony Bevilicqua, Ph.D., of Mettler-Toledo Thornton Inc., and Andrew Collentro of Water Consulting Specialists. Conference registration information is available at http://www.ultrapurewater.com.

The conference is sponsored by Ultrapure Water, a technical journal that covers the business and technology of high-purity water treatment.

Separately, Ultrapure Water also announced its May issue is available and may be viewed on line at http://www.ultrapurewater.com. The current on-line magazine features an article on work to develop water treatment standards in photovoltaic (PV) plants that make solar panels.

The solar water article by Sarah Schoen, Ph.D., Andreas Neuber, Ph.D., Marty Burkhart, John Morgan, and Slava Libman, Ph.D., compares the quality standards for semiconductor-grade water with the water treatment needs in the PV industry. The authors report on a survey by a Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) taskforce that examined high-purity water treatment needs among PV facilities. One goal of the research is the development of high-purity water specs relevant to plants producing solar panels.

One finding of the authors was that the needs of PV endusers differ from those in semiconductor when it comes to high-purity water used during production. PV plants are more concerned about the cost of a water treatment system and tend not to require water as pure as used in semiconductor fabs.

Separately, another feature article in the May issue examined different approaches used to obtain high-purity water samples in semiconductor plants. The article by Dr. Schoen and Betty Pennington showed several specific examples and discussed the pros and cons of differing methods for collecting lab water samples. Another article by Jantje Johnson discusses membrane cleaning and ways to lower the cost of reverse osmosis system operation. The issue also includes an article that summarizes a notice by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to update its Safe Drinking Water Regulations.
