Uncertain future for estate, income taxes create complexity for estate experts and clients

• This year there is no estate tax but next year the estate tax could be very high.
• The Bush tax cuts are schedule to expire in 2010 and it's not clear whether they will be renewed for 2011.
• Future income tax rates on investment income, dividends, earned income, and long-term capital gains are expected rise significantly by 2013.

Two nationally prominent tax experts, Ann Burns and Christopher Hoyt, will provide useful insight via a closed-circuit broadcast of the 18th Annual Estate and Charitable Gift Planning Institute Thursday, September 23 from 10:00am-4:00pm. Ann Burns is chair of the trust, estate and charitable planning group at the Gray Plant Mooty law firm in Minneapolis. She has published many articles and led numerous seminars on topics related to tax planning, charitable giving, and personal finance. Ann Burns practices in Minnesota and Wisconsin and has appeared on several "best lawyer" lists for each of the last 16 years. Ann Burns also is a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.

Christopher Hoyt is a law professor at the University of Missouri - Kansas City where he teaches classes on federal income taxation and business organizations. Before joining the UMKC faculty, he practiced law in Kansas City. Hoyt is the co-chairman of the trusts and estates section of the American Bar Association's committee on charitable organizations.
