VE Day Expected To Renew Interest In British Army Museums
Online, May 4, 2010 (Newswire.com) - The 8th May is the 65th anniversary of VE Day, which commemorates the end of the Second World War in Europe. Such anniversaries invariably see renewed interest in the events of the day and are often accompanied by an upsurge in family history research as relatives seek to discover what part their ancestors may have played.
Military museums across the country are a valuable source of general historical information and their archives can often provide more personal insights into the deeds and careers of those who served in the regiments and corps that they represent. There are 136 such museums and their details are shown at www.armymuseums.org.uk - the website of the Army Museums Ogilby Trust which is approved by the Ministry of Defence as the definitive guide to the regimental and corps museums of the British Army spread throughout the United Kingdom. The site also offers helpful tips on Army ancestor research and useful links for the family historian.
Brigadier Colin Sibun from the Army Museums Ogilby Trust says: "VE Day is an emotive occasion for veterans and their families and people feel a real connection to their military ancestors. Our charity, based in Salisbury, is committed to ensuring that the British Army's rich history is recorded and kept safe for generations to come."
