Vintage Scrabble Getting Ready to Celebrate 25 Years of Production by Hasbro

Vintage Scrabble is about to celebrate 25 years of manufacture by Hasbro. 2011 marks the Silver Anniversary of Hasbro buying the rights to Scrabble brand board games.

After an initially slow start after its invention in 1948, Vintage Scrabble has seen sales increase steadily, having just reached 100 million sets sold worldwide. With sales annually of between one and two million in North America alone. http://www.VintageScrabble.com is your one stop shop for all your Scrabble merchandise needs.

Originally called Lexico, Scrabble was Invented by Alfred Mosher Butts, an unemployed architect from Poughkeepsie, in 1948. The game was dismissed out of hand by every manufacturer Butts took the prototype to. Finally, Butts met James Brunot, a game loving entrepreneur, and the game was given its first chance at success. The two men rented an abandoned school house in Connecticut and began production along with some friends. They started out stamping the wood tiles by hand. In 1952 the pair licensed Selchow & Righter, a Long Island based game producer, in order to bring production up to meet the growing demand after Macy's ordered a run to distribute to their stores. In 1986 Selchow & Righter was sold to COLECO, maker of the famous Cabbage Patch Dolls. Just 3 years later COLECO went out of business and the rights passed into the capable hands of Hasbro, parent company of America's leading board game manufacturer Milton Bradley, giving us the Vintage Scrabble we know and love.

Today Hasbro is ready to celebrate its 25 year of production of the iconic Scrabble board games. There are now many versions available including a junior edition, folding travel editions, deluxe editions with a rotating board. Never fear, the classic Vintage Scrabble set is still available as well. In America alone, one in three households already owns a Scrabble board game. http://www.VintageScrabble.com is a great online source for whichever version you want to start your collection or for any other Vintage Scrabble paraphernalia.
