VoD : Next Level of Digital Film Distribution
2014 Q4 Viewership data from Nielsen speaks what the traditionalists in the industry do not want to hear. Cable-TV is going out of business, on-demand video streaming is tearing in to it. For a while, VoD service providers like Amazon & Netflix have been hot at the heels of the traditional broadcasters. But data out last week suggests it's not long before the cord-cutters make cables kneel.
New York, US, April 10, 2015 (Newswire.com) - As per the Nielsen fact-checker, video streamers earned hiked revenue of 175 per cent between 2010 and 2013, from $1.86 billion to $5.12 billion, while Cable TV dropped an unceremonious 12% alone in the final quarter. Be it original TV shows like House of Cards or major Hollywood production like ‘The Interview’, the VoD platform is catching up with the fancy of the industry. In fact, Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut and a Bradley Cooper starrer skipped the theatrical release entirely for an on-demand slot.2014 Q4 Viewership data from Nielsen speaks what the traditionalists in the industry do not want to hear. Cable-TV is going out of business, on-demand video streaming is tearing in to it. For a while, VoD service providers like Amazon Prime & Netflix have been hot at the heels of the traditional broadcasters. But the data out last week suggests it’s not long before the cord-cutters make cables and linear TV history.

Sony’s controversial production, ‘The Interview’ smashed records all along its way after its Pay-Per-View release on Youtube, raking about USD 15 Million in first four days, and about USD 40 Million in lifetime. And the last we heard, it was acquired by Netflix! The Kevin Spacey starrer House of Cards accompanies Netflix, laughing its way to the bank when Netflix reported a six-fold growth in its profits in 2014. Even for more reserved markets like India, the Vikrant Massey-Kritika Kamra starrer short film went viral on Youtube, inspiring writer-director Navjot Gulati to plan a full-fledged web-series called ‘Local Girlfriend’ with the same cast.
Entertainment industry’s inclination towards the digital platform is rooted in the inability of theaters and other distributions method in reaching out to every section of viewers, while the multi-platform, over-the-top platforms face no such difficulties where target devices such as a Smartphone to a tablet computer, all are capable of streaming. Due to DRM and encryption technologies, piracy gets reined in, if not obliterated completely. For a producer, there’s not much of an amiable win-win situation than this.
Broadcast and Entertainment industry should now read the writing on the wall. On-demand video streaming services have arrived; they are cheaper, easily accessible & have little or no hardware restrictions. VoD is not a threat; it’s a BIGGER monetization tool and in many ways, a BETTER one.
