Voting for a President Every Four Years; It's a Start but It's Not Enough

The birth of Take Back Your State
Take Back Your State

Take Back Your State is a non-partisan tool that provides people an ability to view and vote on legislation being considered in their home state.  To ensure transparency, all user votes are aggregated and visible for everyone to see.  Each week, bill summaries that contain aggregates of how constituents voted are sent to local legislators.  Each legislator will see how their district voted; this provides visibility directly into the views of their constituents.

Take Back Your State's goals are to provide transparency in views at the individual bill level, the ability to communicate those views to legislators and to let people know that they are not alone in their thoughts.  Currently, it has representation in MN, IA, WI, ND, SD, CO, CA and NY, with a goal to bring the tool to the remainder of the country.

"I used to think I was "involved" in politics simply because I took the time out of my busy schedule every four years to vote for a President. To be honest, I rarely, if ever, paid any attention to the state candidate bubbles on the voting ballot, I simply filled in the bubble for the candidate aligned to my "party". Similarly, I never voted in mid-term or special elections. Today, I can tell you that I'm horribly ashamed of that negligence."

Melissa Schoenberg, founder of Take Back Your State said: “I used to think I was “involved” in politics simply because I took the time out of my busy schedule every four years to vote for a President.  To be honest, I rarely, if ever, paid any attention to the state candidate bubbles on the voting ballot, I simply filled in the bubble for the candidate aligned to my "party".  Similarly, I never voted in mid-term or special elections.  Today, I can tell you that I’m ashamed of that negligence.  Recently, I’ve realized that by focusing on only issues and candidates at the Federal level, I have turned a blind eye to what is happening here in my state.  This is only compounded by a quick look at my social media news feeds - there is rarely anyone talking about the bills that impact us right here at home!"

"We can do SO much in our own backyards to improve the lives of our families, friends and neighbors by focusing on State legislation.  Our State legislation has the ability to set the tone for the national stage."

"Initially, I became involved at the state level by sending emails, postcards and making phone calls about individual pieces of legislation.  Lucky for me, I have a great Senator, because he takes the time to hear my approvals and concerns.  Mind you, we don’t agree on everything, as we ARE all human.  However, the times that we were not aligned got me wondering if I was a minority in my views or were there others in my community that shared a similar view.  Thus, the birth of Take Back Your State,” said Schoenberg.
