Wake Plastic Surgery Hosts Free Dog Bite Prevention Seminar in Cary, NC

Online, June 29, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Cary, North Carolina based Wake Plastic Surgery has joined forces with the SPCA of Wake County to create greater safety for area residents by hosting a dog bite prevention seminar on July 16th at 6pm. The event, titled "Playing it Safe with Dogs," will focus on teaching both adults and children how to interact safely with dogs and will be offered free to the public with limited seating. Humane educators from SPCA of Wake County will be presenting.

According to the American Humane Society, an estimated 4.7 million dog bites occur each year in the U.S. Of these, 800,000 require medical care. Most of these victims are under the age of 9. Unfortunately, kids 7 years old and younger are 66 percent more likely to experience severe injuries to the head, face and neck. The best way to prevent a dog bite is through education.

"I see many patients, both children and adults, who have been bitten by a dog," said William T. Stoeckel, MD, plastic surgeon and owner at Wake Plastic Surgery. "It is surprising how frequently dog bites occur. We feel it is important to do what we can to help reduce the incidence of dog bites. That is why we decided to host this event," added Stoeckel.

A dog bite can happen suddenly and unexpectedly. It can happen with a family pet or a dog that is unknown. A variety of factors can affect a dog's tendency toward biting. Having a better understanding of dog behavior and how to safely interact with them can prevent unwanted scars or disfigurement.

"With more than 43 million U.S. homes estimated to have dogs in the family, bites are going to happen," said Vanessa Budnick, Humane Educator and Grants Manager at SPCA. "The hope is to educate people so that it happens less often, which keeps people and dogs safe," added Budnick.
