Walla Walla Blues Take 2 of 3 in Spokane Hockey Tourney
Spokane WA - April 18, 2010 - Spokane played host to the 32nd Annual Heads Up Spring Gentleman's Hockey Tournament on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Eagles Arena. There were 22 teams from Washington, Idaho, Alberta and British Colombia competing in the three game round-robin event.
The Walla Walla Blues opened the tourney Saturday morning against The Dawgs, a well oiled team from Calgary, Alberta. The Blues were only down by a goal entering the third period but ended up losing 8-3. Goalie Jason Wilke kept the Blues in the game by kicking aside 38 shots in the defeat.
The Saturday evening event pitted the Blues against PowerHouse from Sand Point, Idaho. Captain Nate Ewer did some line juggling before the game and that proved to be very effective. The Blues took and early 3-1 lead but PowerHouse tied the score going into the third period. A hat trick by Mike Steinke was too much for the Idaho team and Walla Walla hung on to win 4-3.
The final game was on Sunday morning against the hometown favorite, Custom Painting of Spokane. The Blues scored just 1:51 into the first period when Keith Rolle netted the first of his two goals of the game. James Kozik and Steinke also scored two goals apiece to power Walla Walla to a 6-3 victory.
The Blues consist of a collection of players from the Walla Walla region including Walla Walla, College Place, Pasco and Umatilla. This tournament was the first time they ever played together as a team. Players on the Blues range from 22 years old to 53 years old and all play at the YWCA Ice Chalet in Walla Walla.
