Water Base And Discharge Methods: New Waves In T Shirt Printing

With plastisol methods, the screen printing industry was lagging behind in producing high-end results. Designers now tackle this issue using new methods like water base and discharge screen printing.

Because there have been drastic changes in almost all fields of technology, the techniques of serigraphy, too, have evolved amazingly. The use of plastisol inks, which had been mainstream all this while, has not been very useful in yielding soft-hand prints. Of course, the quality of designs and patterns is a hot topic of discussion in the textile industry, especially amongst entrepreneurs associated with serigraphy, popularly know as screen printing.

The problems associated with plastisols:

Plastisol designs, in terms of quality, are very uneven, rough and opaque. They sit on top of the fabric like glue-stuck rubber cut outs and refuse to sink into it to result in prints that feel natural. Moreover, the colors need an underbase to be highlighted proficiently. Further, they are plastic casts, which have to be turned into a rubbery form with the help of chemicals like phthalates, which, we know, are dangerous carcinogenic substances.

Thus, although this method is a way of cheap tshirts printing, with so many issues popping up every time, entrepreneurs have felt the necessity to develop alternatives, time and again. The necessity was, obviously, to come up with methods that would not only yield amazing, soft-hand prints, but also stay easy on the environment. The use of phthalates, of course, was out of the question.

So, have they really been able to design such alternatives?

The answer would be yes. From the plastisol techniques of custom t shirt printing, designers have now shifted to water-soluble inks, that produce better results. These techniques of water base screen printing are amazing and convenient because they have been successful in producing results which people desire, without posing a threat to the environment.

Unlike plastisols, these inks sink down to the level of the threads and actually dye them instead of just sticking to their surfaces. This is because such inks can be absorbed with ease by any given fabric material. But, etching designs on dark colored garments is still a problem, because these inks do not show up on dark backgrounds. Using underbases could be a solution. But, that would again call for the same, old method of plastisol.

Still and all, because technology is all about huge, surging changes, a viable way out has been designed by entrepreneurs, yet again. They call it the art of discharge t shirt printing, the technique which uses the same eco-friendly ink and still can create bright, stunning designs on dark colored apparel. The trick lies in the use of an additional chemical bleach, which is activated using a catalytic system, so that it destroys the original dye in specific areas upon the dark fabric. Since these areas are now as good as light colored fabrics, the eco-friendly inks can then be applied onto them and desired designs achieved.

These new techniques have revolutionized the entire textile and serigraphy industries. Designs and patterns are now much better than what they used to be. Indeed, such innovative ways are the newest waves that are taking these industries by storm.
