Weight and Health Aided by Lower Intake of Carbohydrates, Study Finds

Diet high in carbohydrates sets off a metabolic cascade of events, such as an increase in blood serum glucose and insulin and an increase of lipids.

A recent study conducted at the University of Alabama at Birmingham suggests that a low-carbohydrate diet may be helpful for weight management in prepubescent girls.

Researchers examined 26 obese African-American girls between 9 and 14 on either a diet that had 43% of its calories from carbohydrates or 57% from carbohydrates. They found that the low-carb group had a reduction in cholesterol and triglycerides and better glucose, insulin response and an improvement in reproductive hormones.

According to lead author Krista Casazza, Ph.D., R.D., "There is evidence that the prepubescent years are vitally important for young girls in terms of body composition and the development of good bone density. A diet high in carbohydrates sets off a metabolic cascade of events, such as an increase in blood serum glucose and insulin and an increase of lipids. These events are associated with an elevated risk of obesity."

"Not all carbohydrates are created equal," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). "Fruits, vegetables and tubers are often placed in the same category as grains and manmade refined and processed foods. This is an error, because our bodies process these two food groups differently. The grains and man-made foods are very concentrated and it only takes a small amount to raise our blood sugar levels enough to trigger an insulin response. They are often based on an unnatural combination of macronutrients never found in nature"

"A constant supply of refined and processed food products puts a major strain on our bodies," the Griesel's elaborate. "From an evolutionary perspective, these 'food' items have only recently been introduced and yet have become a major component of our diet. They only provide empty calories that are almost completely devoid of the critical nutrients we require for optimal health."
