This means as global events and policies happen, it can affect the immigration laws in Canada. “New regulations can completely change who is eligible to apply to come or stay in Canada,” says Shawar. “New regulations often change the type of method people in need of immigration help will be able to become members of Canadian society.” One of the largest struggles affecting immigration and immigration lawyers in Canada is having the patience, time, and dedication to work with a client for years, in some cases. “You are assisting people in being granted privileges not rights, which is a much more difficult thing to do,” says Shawar.

Family Lawyers

Family lawyers deal with a wide range of family related issues, including divorce, child custody, common law marriages, and much more. Due to the nature of their work and clients, family lawyers must be more emotional intelligent than other lawyers. “A good family lawyer is trained to be sensitive to issues relating to the best interest of children and family violence,” adds George Lee of George Lee Law Corp, “Family clients are very emotional, and one party is always hurt or wants to get even with another party.”

For most clients, this is the first time they have gone through a divorce and as a result they will be very confused, hurt, and angry. “We have to educate clients about the family laws and rules,” says Lee. Family lawyers often deal with parents that have children and as time goes on, they are discovering better ways to peacefully resolve issues to minimize the impact on their children. “I often say to my clients: “You may win the fight, but may lose the battle.” I always encourage clients to settle their disputes outside of the courtroom to save family resources for their children,” Lee says, “In a lot of situations, the advice works miracles.” Probably the largest challenge for family lawyers is resolving conflict, while making their clients happy and minimizing the impact on the children. “I first deal with emotional issues with clients so that [they] can make better legal decisions in the process of litigation,” Lee says.
