What To Expect During A Rhinoplasty Healing Process
Online, November 26, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Getting a nose job is a huge change. And although most patients are anxious to see their new face, a recovery time and healing process is a requirement for post-rhinoplasty patients.
Most likely, the surgeon will discuss the nose job recovery process prior to the procedure. But since each patient heals differently, there is no strict set of rules or guidelines for healing time. Generally, here's what to expect when recovering from a rhinoplasty:
A small splint will be placed on the nose. This helps patients to keep the nose straight while it is still vulnerable. Some surgeons may even use nasal packaging to help keep the swelling down to a minimum. This packaging is placed in the nose right after the surgery and may be removed the next day.
Mild to moderate discomfort is also common with rhinoplasties. But this pain is generally controlled with pain killers, which the surgeon should prescribe. Most patients' pain goes away or minimizes after two days of healing
If a patient is feeling stuffy or like his/her nose is clogged, a decongestant will help. Blowing the nose is not an option for another few weeks after the surgery.
Another aspect of the healing process is the bruising. Many patients who undergo an open rhinoplasty will notice some bruising and swelling for a few days or weeks after the surgery. Applying cold compresses will help this, as well as homeopathic alternatives like bromeliad.
Doctors may also suggest simple healing tactics, like keeping the head elevated, sleeping in a different position and (obviously) avoiding any trauma to the nose.
