Why Artists Choose NY

Producer/Engineer Christos Tsantilis and Photographer Ed Marshall show Andrew Mockler what New York is all about.

Andrew Mockler is a musician and songwriter, currently living in Vancouver, Canada. While studying for his degree, Andrew was talent spotted by Sting to sing lead and backing vocals as part of his UK tour in 2004 and 2006. This experience gave Andrew the push to pursue a career in music full time.
In late 2006, Andrew moved to New Zealand and quickly became established in the local music scene. Andrew was the winner of a new talent search by Simon Holloway's Beaver Studios, and he began working with Holloway and producer Jonathan Campbell to develop himself as an artist and a writer.
In 2010, Andrew released his debut single 'She Waits', which reached #1 on the New Zealand iTunes singer / songwriter chart. The supporting music video was filmed in Moscow with top video producer Shae Sterling. Andrew was interviewed and performed live on national TV show Good Morning to promote the release. Andrew is looking for good reasons as to why New York should be his home base starting 2013.

Andrew flew into New York on a red eye flight with Cathay Pacific from Vancouver. The flight arrived at JFK at around 06:30 local time. At the Area 51 Studio, Chris is coordinating with Drew from Studio Consultants. After making it through immigration, It was just after 0800. He arrived at his Lower East Side apartment where he would be staying for the weekend. Andrew's first meeting would be with Markuann Smith, a good friend of Andrew's manager. After chatting for about an hour, Markuann would later introduce Andrew to Jason Kpana an A&R at Universal Records. Once things were wrapping up at Universal, it was time to head up to Area 51 Studios on West 51 street.

Andrew would be meeting with Christos Tsantilis, Christos is a Producer/Grammy nominated Recording Engineer and a stickler for quality. Graham Boswell and his team at Prism sound help him achieve the quality necessary to beat the competition. After listening to several tracks produced by Christos. Christos and Andrew decided on a track called "Hot Girls" to work on together. While writing and recording, Andrew was introduced to NY based Photographer Ed Marshall. Ed stopped by to document the multi-studio adventure. In the days that Andrew visited they recorded in three studios, Area 51, MusicWorks on the upper West Side and the Cutting Room in Soho. Andrew mentioned, as a general rule, He didn't enjoy the studio experience; it can be arduous and frustrating, but working with such talented people got his creative juices flowing and it made him bring all he could to the track.

"After the first night I was completely exhausted, but I felt so good about my experience. I just found myself continuously inspired. The biggest highlight of my trip was the phenomenal people I was lucky enough to meet! Everyone was so friendly, kind, and helpful, that I felt that these folks were my good friends before I had even gotten a chance to know them. While I will admit that people out on the streets can seem cold and insular, the people I met showed me incredible hospitality and warmth. The lovely chaps even saw me off at the airport! As I write this I am preparing my US visa application so I can get back to New York City as soon as possible. Start spreading the news, indeed."
