Online, February 1, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Melbourne, Australia - 1 February 2010- Editor-in-Chief of Early Intervention in Psychiatry, Professor Patrick McGorry, was awarded the prestigious Australian of the Year 2010 Award - in honour of the contributions he has made in the area of child and adolescent psychiatry.
Published by Wiley-Blackwell and officially endorsed by the International Early Psychosis Association, Early Intervention in Psychiatry seeks to build on the exponential progress in early psychosis, as well as the widespread interest around the issue of preventive psychiatry; to create a common forum for researchers and clinicians to share ideas, experience and data. As founding editor of the journal, Professor McGorry identified a gap in the existing knowledge and literature on early intervention, and sought to fill this disparity through the publishing partnership with Wiley-Blackwell.
"Early Intervention in Psychiatry is on a mission to establish preventative strategies as a central element in mental health care across the globe", declared Professor McGorry. "This will take time and will require imagination, enthusiasm, advocacy, commitment and collaboration amongst academic leaders, researchers, clinicians, policy-makers, bureaucrats and, most importantly, the general public."
He added, "We must create a major academic and clinical focus in a field where early intervention has not been evident to date, and Early Intervention in Psychiatry is one of the strategic tools in this process of construction. I hope everyone will use it to its full potential."
Professor McGorry is also head of Orygen Youth Health Australia, director of the National Youth Mental Health Foundation, Headspace, and an editor of Psychological Interventions in Early Psychosis: A Treatment Handbook - also published by Wiley.
Mark Robertson, Publishing Director at Wiley-Blackwell said, "We are delighted with Professor McGorry's award, as it recognizes all the hard work he has put in to champion the importance of youth mental health. Wiley-Blackwell is honoured to have the opportunity to lend our publishing expertise and international networks in support of Professor McGorry's endeavours. His work has truly been instrumental in extending the frontier of academic and clinical psychiatry."
