Will Derren Brown Be Using NLP In His 2012 Tour?

In order to seemingly predict and control human behaviour, as well as performing mind-bending feats of mentalism Derren Brown is currently touring the UK with his own brand of magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship.

Derren Brown is currently touring the UK with his own brand of "magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship in order to seemingly predict and control human behaviour, as well as performing mind-bending feats of mentalism." [taken from the Derren Brown website]. But are his techniques based in Neuro-lingusitic Programming, as many people suggest?

Derren Brown is currently travelling the UK as part of his Svengali tour, which visits Leeds, Wolverhampton, Manchester, Southampton, Newcastle, Blackpool, Glasgow, Belfast, Dublin and Cardiff among others throughout March April, May and June 2012. His shows involve some inspiring feats of apparent mind control, which many people suggest have their routes in a technique called Neuro-linguistic Programming, or NLP. But is this assertion correct, and does Derren Brown use NLP during his shows to influence and the change the behaviour of his audiences?

There are a lot of misconceptions about NLP, or Neuro-lingustic Programming. Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is an advanced mind management methodology. It is a hugely powerful approach to communications, and can bring about change and improved performance in those striving for excellence in fields as broad as sports, sales, leadership, coaching and education. Similar to emotional intelligence, NLP can help people to better understand others, to change and manage their own behaviour and speech, improve habits and develop excellent and fruitful relationships. So NLP is a tool or a technique that can be utilised in many positive situations to achieve very beneficial results.

The everyday applications of NLP are far reaching and various, and quite removed from the mysterious world of mind control that is sometimes portrayed by mainstream media.

So does Derren Brown use NLP in his performances?

While many people have suggested that he does, Brown in fact reports that he has "never mentioned it outside of [his] book" and that his shows make use of a number of different communication techniques. Certainly, he shows contain elements of hypnosis techniques, and the use of leading questions to draw audiences to certain 'decisions'. But whatever techniques he uses, it is clear that Derren Brown is a master of communication and influence. And the great news for other people interested in the power of communication, persuasion and influence in their lives is that many of these techniques can be taught and learned. The power to have positive influence over your life is there for the taking. That is a powerful thought.
