Volunteer projects give students a sense of accomplishment and earns them community service hours towards graduation.
Online, November 24, 2009 (Newswire.com) - Mars Hill, NC -- In recent weeks, students at Wolf Creek Academy in Mars Hill, North Carolina have been able to volunteer their time at a local area ski resort, helping to prepare for the upcoming snow ski season. The contributions by Wolf Creek Academy students included cleaning, weed eating slopes and other various projects.
The hard work has allowed students and staff at Wolf Creek Academy to learn about teamwork, reciprocity and the value of giving back to the community.
"We're very proud of our students for all of their hard work and contributions," said Dr. Patricia Jones, director and co-founder of Wolf Creek Academy.
"Projects like these help to build self esteem, confidence and give students a sense of accomplishment," she added.
Based in western North Carolina, Wolf Creek Academy is a private, non-profit, emotional growth school that offers education and programs for teens with a history of emotional difficulties, poor academic performance, strained family relationships and behavior problems. Volunteer programs are one of the many things that make the school unique.
The school's close relationship with the ski resort also allows for part-time employment opportunities and physical education programs.
"I think it's a great concept that has worked out well both for the school and our business. They are an awesome group of kids and the staff sets the example by volunteering right alongside with them," said Ken Jones, manager for the ski resort.
The resort is now open for the 2009-2010 ski season and the students at Wolf Creek Academy will continue their volunteer work, helping with greeting visitors, cleaning and organizing lift lines.
Additionally, Wolf Creek Academy students will be able to take advantage of the slopes for fun and fellowship throughout the ski season. Some of the upper-level students will also begin working and receive compensation for their work.
All of the students volunteering will earn community service hours towards their graduation, which will also help in obtaining scholarships as they look into colleges of their choice.
