Women's Leaders Take To The Stage in New York

Online, May 10, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Maria Hinojosa, managing editor and host of NPR's Latina USA, opened Women's eNews 21 Leaders for the 21st Century gala last week with a minutes silence for the families being torn apart by Arizona's immigration laws.
Women's eNews celebrated its ninth annual gala honoring the commitments and achievements 21 people have bettered the lives of women and girls. This year's honorees spoke of the continuing need for women's stories to be told through Women's eNews and other news media.
Pat Mitchell, president and chief executive officer of the Paley Center for Media, served as emcee and emphasized that lack of other news media focusing on women's issues. In fact, she said, the most recent research indicates that women are the subject of about 12 percent of all news coverage, including celebrities, fashion and sports.
Pulitzer-prize winning journalist, Gayle Reaves-King, editor of the Fort Worth Weekly; Loreen Arbus, a producer and philanthropist for the disabled; Carol Jenkins, founding president of the New York's Women's Media Center and Dana Tyler, senior news anchor for WCBS-TV roamed the room introducing the 21 Leaders 2010. Each honoree expressed a commitment to continue working for women's rights and equity.
Michael Dowd brought a client he said was being denied her right to call witnesses in her defense of a murder charge. The client had been tortured for 15 years, Dowd said, before she killed her abuser and Dowd has been denied the opportunity to present self-defense testimony.
Kathy Cloninger proved that the Girl Scouts USA creates leaders asking those in the room to raise their hands if they had been a girl scout. Hands of roughly half of the attendees shot up.
WCBS Dana Tyler promised honoree Martha Diaz that she would answer her call and push for the invisible positive voices of women in hip hop into the limelight.
