Words Run Deep: North Carolina Documentary Explores Hip Hop's Impact On Popular Culture

Online, July 29, 2010 (Newswire.com) - (Durham, North Carolina) - Music lovers might agree Hip Hop has transcended to crafty "hooks" and beats, over poetic substance; that rhythmically raw pioneering socially conscious lyrics of the 1980s and early 1990s. What about the content of today's Hip Hop artists, and the messages echoed across the world?

On Friday, October 8 at 7:30p.m., the historic Hayti Heritage Center, at 804 Old Fayetteville Street in Durham, will host a premiere showing of the locally produced documentary, Words Run Deep, as part of its annual Friday Night at the Movies series. A panel discussion and Q&A will follow the 30-minute film presentation.

Words Run Deep, is a feature documentary that probes today's Hip Hop music genre, its influences on popular culture, and its future.

The narrative-form documentary, produced by Wake Forest resident and former television Journalist, Charles S. Martin, features Christopher "Play" Martin, formerly of the billboard chart-topping rap duo, Kid 'n Play; Duke University Professor and National Public Radio Commentator, Dr. Mark Anthony Neal; WQOK 97.5 Radio Disc Jockey, Shena Jordan; Princeton University Professor, Dr. Cornel West, and a host of North Carolina independent spoken-word and music artists who defy mainstream commercialism with their own brand and style.

Words Run Deep is a community-focused cultural arts project suitable for all audiences for the purpose of educating and initiating family and community dialogue.

A donation of $5.00 will be accepted upon admission, to support the St. Joseph's Historic Foundation, Incorporated (SJHF).
