World's Largest Travel Center Boosts Guest WiFi With the Governor™ From CirrusWorks

Iowa80 deploys innovative new technology to optimize bandwidth on remote Internet circuits.

Iowa 80 Truckstop began serving truckers out of a small white enamel building in 1964, before Interstate 80 was completely built. Today, after 28 expansions and remodels, it operates like a small town. In addition to the restaurants, stores, movie theater and barbershop, travelers expect fast, reliable Internet access.  “Dependable WiFi is as important to our customers as good quality food and clean, comfortable places to relax,” said Mike Hutchison, General Manager, Iowa 80. “We believe that great Internet access differentiates Iowa 80 from our competition.”

The problem facing Iowa 80 was that they needed additional bandwidth to handle the explosion in Internet traffic. Travelers were bringing multiple devices on the road, looking to immediately connect upon arrival. “During peak periods, Internet congestion bogged down to a slow crawl,” said Burke Strand, IT manager, Iowa 80. “The explosive use of tablets and smart phones was overwhelming our Internet circuit.” Customers started complaining and service calls went up. He needed a solution fast.

The Governor™ really improved Internet access for our customers. Customer complaints about slow Internet have stopped and customers have commented that page loads are faster and even video streaming has improved. We don't have a huge circuit, but the Governor™ has definitely improved what we've got.

Burke Strand, IT Manager

But simply adding more capacity to the remote location was technically impossible, so Strand set out to research alternatives and found The Governor™ product from CirrusWorks.  The Governor™ is an innovative bandwidth optimization technology that increases the capacity of existing Internet circuits, especially on busy WiFi networks.

The Governor™ met his criteria because of its plug and play nature, which requires no configuration, making it easy to install and quick to take effect. The Governor™ operates without complex rules or policies, so it doesn’t need ongoing adjustments and expensive configuration. He was impressed by The Governor’s™ proprietary technology that dynamically adjusts bandwidth allocation in real time and optimizes circuit utilization for the entire population of Internet users. In this way, no single user can spoil the Internet experience for the rest.

The results were immediate. Usage spikes and dropped connections were virtually eliminated. “The Governor™ really improved Internet access for our customers,” said Strand. “Customer complaints about slow Internet have stopped and customers have commented that page loads are faster and even video streaming has improved.” Strand went on to say that “we don’t have a huge circuit, but the Governor™ has definitely improved what we’ve got.”

Iowa 80 is the world's largest truck stop, located along Interstate 80 off exit 284 in Walcott, Iowa. Set on 220 acres, the site receives 5,000 visitors daily.
