Yar'adua Foundation and the European Union to Host Documentary Premiere

Yar'adua Foundation and the European Union will host the premiere of "Nowhere to Run: Nigeria's Climate and Environmental Crisis", a documentary to raise awareness about the impact of climate change in Nigeria, on November 17, 2015

On November 17, 2015, the Yar’Adua Foundation, in partnership with the European Union, will host the premiere of the documentary film “Nowhere to Run: Nigeria’s Climate and Environmental Crisis” at the Yar'Adua Centre in Abuja between 6 and 8pm.

At this high profile event, the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, H. E. Prof. Yemi Osinbajo is the Special Guest of Honour. Other special guests include the Ambassador of the European Union Delegation to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to ECOWAS, H.E. Michel Arrion, and the former Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Vice Chairman, Yar’Adua Foundation, H. E. Atiku Abubakar.

Climate change is redrawing our coastlines, altering where we can grow food, changing where we can find water, exposing us to fiercer storms and more severe droughts.  It also forces large numbers of people to move from their homelands.  Combined with demands of a growing population and adverse effects of our own activities, communities in Nigeria face an imminent environmental crisis that will have significant socio-economic and political impact.

Directed by Dan McCain of Core Productions, the documentary tells the story of environmental threats and unique challenges to security in Nigeria from the perspective of affected communities.   The film aspires to inform and inspire stakeholders as it seeks to address one of the defining challenges of our time.

Climate change and action to fight it guides the European Union's internal policy and cooperation with its partners across the world, including in Nigeria.   The European Union is committed to reducing its own greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 and by 80-95% by 2050 compared to 1990.  This is to ensure that global temperatures do not rise by more than 2 degrees centigrade - above which catastrophic consequences are predicted for our planet.

The Yar’Adua Foundation was established by the friends, family and associates of late Shehu Yar’Adua to honour the legacy of one of Nigeria’s foremost contemporary leaders. Through its facilities and programmes, the Foundation endeavours to further the ideals of Shehu Yar’Adua; his commitment to national unity, good governance and to building a just and democratic society for all Nigerians.
