You Can Take The Girl Out of the Improv...Improv Vet Sally Schaub To Produce Comedy Show at Rocket Video April 10
(Los Angeles, CA) - Sally Schaub knows comedy. Having spent the early '90s working for the largest purveyor and tastemaker of comedy-the Improv-Schaub witnessed some historic moments: she was there the night Tim Allen's showcase resulted in Home Improvement, she attended The Late Late Show showcase when a fair-skinned comic called Conan O'Brien got the gig, and she was among the first to check out a teenaged comic named Dave Chappelle shortly after his arrival on the West Coast.
Those Improv years broadened her palate (as it did all of ours, only we might not have been conscious of it) as a comedy connoisseur. Schaub "watched Ferguson singlehandedly put a new face on comedy with his hysterical storytelling." Fans of the late Mitch Hedberg might not realize it, but they owe Schaub a debt of thanks: she fought to get him stage time when "he couldn't get a spot at the Improv to save his life," Schaub recalls. And when she "gave Janeane Garofalo her first long set at a gay club in Long Beach," she gave the crowd a crash course in Alternative Comedy 101: "Janeane sat in a chair and just talked for an hour. They loved her."
Schaub applied all that on-the-job training to Sirens of Satire, one of her proudest achievements: an all-woman show she successfully produced with Penny Wiggens for 10 years.
Post-Improv, she expresses her love of comedy and comics by producing a monthly show "for [her] own mental health and to give comics stage time" at Hollywood's Rocket Video. Stage time of any stripe's a coveted commodity in L.A.'s standup scene, but stage time at Rocket Video is premium stuff: Schaub is known for putting together a high-quality show, drawing comics you'll recognize from movies and/or TV as well as--with Schaub's sensibility--comics you may well one day see on the big or small screen.
Rocket Video is located at 726 N La Brea Ave. Hollywood, CA 90038. The next Rocket Video Comedy show is this Saturday, April 10, at 8:00 p.m. The show is free and open to the public.
