You Can Teach Your Child to Be James Bond

Tutors International report rise in off-curriculum home schooling, as more students elect to be tutored in vocational skills or more advanced topics than they'd get in school.

Families choosing to homeschool their children are increasingly opting for off-curriculum lessons in a bid to jumpstart their kids' careers, reported private tutoring agency, Tutors International.

Adam Caller, founder of the Oxford-based private tuition agency and a member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association, said that he and his tutors had been increasingly involved in developing unique, advanced programs of study to help students launch their careers early, or to focus primarily on the subjects that interest them most.

Private tutoring can provide a way to help a child down his or her chosen career path from early age. Freedom from the prescribed school curriculum can mean students make most of their individual talents, while incorporating fundamental academic and life skills into more engaging activities.

"Parents often welcome the ability to set their own agenda for their children's schooling. They choose what subjects they would like them to study, and to what level. Many countries have no requirement to follow a state-led curriculum. There's no reason why a family couldn't use employ a home tutor to prepare their son for a career as James Bond."

"Mr Caller went on to talk about an example of a family in the West Indies who recruited a full-time private tutor to educate their 14-year-old son in degree-level business skills, accounting, and economics, so he was primed to enter the family business at 17.

"We as educators have a duty to provide the highest standards of learning, and give children a rounded education that will equip them with all the skills they will need in later life. However, there is no reason why maths, science and literacy shouldn't be interwoven into other subject areas, and to an exceptional standard." commented Mr Caller.
