Young Balinese Students in Training for Bigger Ocean Views on the High Seas.
Bali, Indonesia, March 28, 2016 (Newswire.com) - On December 9, 2015, two students from one of Monarch Cruise Line and Hospitality Training Center’s five schools commenced training at Pousada Canggu. The Singaraja students graduated in housekeeping and welcome the opportunity to further their skills and expand their horizons in the mini resort style accommodation consisting of five modern villas.
Monarch was founded by I Nengah Adi Susanto, Nyoman Sudi Artawan and Made Sumitra in 2009 with just 13 students. The school has quickly grown to over 1,500 students annually due to their solid reputation and student motto of “Putting your education and your career first.” Monarch students are typically aged between 18 and 25, but can be older; who want a better life for themselves; and, see access to that through working on board cruise liners such as Disney, Royal Caribbean, and Celebrity, to name but a few.
"When we were approached by Monarch Bali to have two students whilst they were waiting to have their final interviews before working on the cruise lines, we jumped at the chance. We are all about making a difference to people, and especially making a difference to the youth of any culture," says Russ - Pousada Canggu Bali

The partnership between Monarch and Pousada Canggu began when the owners of Pousada, Monarch and consulting company Western Influences sat at Pak Sudi’s restaurant for a meeting. There was a discussion about the strength of the students’ theoretical skills in hospitality, yet a gap was evident in students’ on-the-job experience, which is essential in turning out potential workers of the highest calibre for the highly competitive international cruise lines and 5-Star resorts industries. Russ and Tracy, from Pousada Canggu, put their hands up to enhance Monarch’s status as the leading supplier of hospitality staff by taking on Monarch students for further practical on-the-job training.
“Having the students learn on-the-job skills has made a huge difference to the confidence level of the young men we have had here over the past four months,” say Russ and Tracy. “The students go to places like Pousada Canggu in order to understand why housekeeping is done a certain way for guests and to interact with English speaking guests before they enter life on the high seas.” “Their English improves dramatically,” says Tracy. “It is wonderful to watch the students grow in such a short period of time”.

Without the Monarch training, the students would have a life of working in traditional rice fields or selling goods on the streets in the footsteps of their family members. “Not that there is anything wrong with that,” says Sudi, “But, more often than not, it’s the student’s mother and father who want something better for their kids. They pay for the tuition, trusting we will deliver a better future for their children.”
Sudi dreamed of inspiring Balinese people to want better futures for themselves some years ago, after spending many years working on cruise lines as a cocktail barman himself. Sudi learned flare and gained confidence and talent behind the bar, including becoming Employee of the Year for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines in 2006. “My wish has come true. I wanted to show the people of Bali the world. I want the young students we have trained to be paid to see the world. The better they are at English, the more talented they are at their job, the more the cruise lines will want them. It’s a world I know well. It’s a world I want to share with others.”
Monarch Bali, Pousada Canggu, and Western Influences have worked together in the venture to offer the youth of Bali a new and different future – a future that inspires confidence, leadership, and the ambition to be their best.
