Young Doctor Fights Snooki Syndrome

Sisters take a stand for brains AND beauty by launching an online boutique for brilliant women.

Taylor Brandt, MD and her sister, Hailey Brandt, are two young women taking a stand for brains AND beauty. They have launched an online retail website featuring merchandise geared toward intelligent, productive women. Their new venture www.thegirldoc.com, went live Thanksgiving week garnering over 500 Facebook fans in three days.

In response to the way many young women choose to portray themselves in the media today, the sisters decided that they want to make sure young females know that it is cool to be brainy as well as beautiful. Dr. Brandt in her last year of Internal Medicine residency and Hailey, a merchandiser for a global jewelry company, launched a website featuring merchandise that is attractive, young and purposeful. "Ha! Just like us," stated Hailey, sister in charge of marketing for GirlDoc. "We hate the fact that every time we turn on the television to relax, we are bombarded with the exploits of Paris, Snooki and Lindsey. What kind of message is that sending to young women? That the only thing they are good for is getting dressed up and drunk?"

Taylor and Hailey like dressing up and having a drink, but they are smart about it. Both girls are graduates of Texas State University. Taylor went on to continue her studies in medicine at UTMB and was recently granted a fellowship in Rheumatology in Charleston SC. The girls each put themselves through college working in retail.

The sisters' new website reflects their choices and, they believe, the choices of many young women like themselves. "Just because we wear white coats doesn't mean we wear granny panties." said Dr. Brandt while post call. Items featured on their site encourage environmental responsibility, like BPA free water bottles, organic laundry soap and fair trade cotton products. They also showcase intelligent, useful items such as self contained cell phone charger cases, pocket protectors and what they call "brainy couture." Many of the items on the site are original designs created by women in cottage industries in the U.S.

With plans to expand the site in the immediate future to include scrubs, greeting cards and care packages for educated women, the sisters feel they can make a difference as role models for girls. Another project currently in the works is to establish the GirlDoc foundation for women seeking higher education. "We feel like we can give all day to the Komen Foundation, The American Heart Association, etc... which is admirable, but we are missing the boat by not also funding smart women to do the research necessary for the success of these programs. Hopefully our website will be able to help with that," said Hailey.

The website www.thegirldoc.com features brilliant gifts for brilliant women including care packages, apparel and gifts.
