Young People Sign Chart-Topper To Headline Event

McLean the star attraction at launch of You Can Do It project

YOUNG PEOPLE SIGN CHART-TOPPER TO HEADLINE EVENT

Thousands of young people will have the chance to quiz chart-topper McLean and learn the dangers of under-age drinking at Stoke-on-Trent's biggest summer party.

The 'My Name' R&B singer is to appear at the launch of the You Can Do It project, a pioneering programme of events organised by young people to educate and inform on a range of issues in a fun environment.

After tackling under-age drinking, the focus will move on to health and fitness at the next event, which is expected to be at the end of the year.

McLean will be joined by rapper Kayne and hip-hop star Manny Moscow, performing new single 'Finally in Love' for an audience of up to 3500 young people at Fenton Manor Sports Complex on Saturday 22nd August.

BME Community Engagement Officer Jay Gardiner, who works for Newcastle CVS, has helped to organise the event and brought together two BME groups to engage with the city's young people.

He said: "We have brought together a host of organisations which provide information on subjects like under-age drinking and sexually transmitted infections, in a way that makes it accessible for young people.

"Our research showed they enjoyed similar events in the past, but were disheartened because they were one-offs, or dependant on funding. We hope to avoid this by bringing in sponsorship.

"Our main aim is to create something sustainable, and give young people the skills and support they need to run the project themselves."

Tickets are on sale now, and prices range from £10 (bronze) to £20 (gold). Gold ticket-holders will have the chance to interview McLean and his fellow celebrities, and receive signed memorabilia.

Alongside the musical performances, there will be a host of workshops on dance, drumming and singing, and versions of game shows like Blind Date and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

There will also be attractions like zorbing and bucking broncos.

The event takes place at Fenton Manor from 1pm to 12am. Further information and tickets are available at http://youcandoitproject.org.
