Zumbathon at Stanford University: Join the fight against liver cancer!

Stanford, CA - On Saturday, January 30, 2010, the Asian Liver Center at Stanford University, Team HBV and Stanford Athletics: Physical Education, Recreation and Wellness will be hosting the first Zumbathon event at Stanford University.

Date: Saturday, January 30, 2010
Time: 1:00pm - 3:00pm, Registration begins at 12:30pm
Location: Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation, Stanford University

Fusing hypnotic Latin and International rhythms with easy-to-follow moves, Zumba Fitness is a Latin-inspired cardio workout creating a dynamic, exciting, and effective fitness system that will blow you away. Fun and music are the two inspirational ingredients that magically motivate the body to effectively burn calories and tone all muscle groups, incorporate full range of motion, and improve the cardiovascular system.

Join the Zumbathon against liver cancer on January 30th as a team of local Bay Area Zumba Instructors lead participants in 2 hours of Latin rhythms to keep everyone sweating and having fun. No experience is necessary to participate in the Zumbathon. This is a family-friendly event open to the public and welcomes all members of the community.

A Zumbathon is a Zumba party with all proceeds from donations going to a charity or cause. The suggested donation for the Zumbathon at Stanford is $10 with all proceeds benefiting the fight against liver cancer and the Jade Ribbon Campaign. Outreach and education volunteers from Team HBV and the Jade Ribbon Campaign will set up educational booths and distribute informational resources and free prizes.

Event Date Reminders: Registration begins at 12:30pm, the Zumbathon begins at 1:00pm. Please wear comfortable workout attire with tennis shoes. Bring a towel and water bottle! Most importantly, just remember to have fun!

About Zumba Fitness: Zumba® is a Latin-inspired cardio workout that fuses hypnotic Latin and International rhythms and easy to follow moves to create a dynamic fitness program that will blow you away. It is all about having fun and no experience is necessary! Latin rhythms include merengue, salsa, cumbia, reggaeton, belly dancing, samba, hip hop, and many more. So ditch the workout, join the party!

About the Jade Ribbon Campaign: The greatest health disparity between Asian Americans and white Americans is the prevalence of chronic hepatitis B infection and the high incidence of liver cancer, 80% of which is caused by chronic hepatitis B infection. One in 10 Asian and Pacific Islander (API) Americans have chronic hepatitis B infection compared with 1 in 1,000 of Caucasian Americans. In May 2001, the Asian Liver Center launched the Jade Ribbon Campaign in the San Francisco Bay Area to spread awareness about hepatitis B and liver cancer in the Asian community. The objective of the campaign is to increase awareness and provide ethnic-sensitive health information to the API community and health professionals in an effort to reduce this major health disparity and improve API health.
