For the 48th Earth Day anniversary, ten State governments were chosen by the American State Litter Scorecard for having excessive, harmful quantities of waste on their public properties.

The two major party U.S. Presidential nominees and their Vice Presidential picks come from "dirtiest" local and state governments noted for severe pollution. Yet, in 2016, polls show America's voters and citizens are more concerned than ever about environmental issues.

In observing Earth Day 2015, the American State Litter Scorecard recognizes the top ten cleanest, Green regimes in the U.S., and the Governors shaping that achievement.

Indiana continues to lead amid Midwestern America governments with polluted public spaces, as documented in the 2014 version of the American State Litter Scorecard. Neighboring Michigan and Kentucky were also noted for intense uncleanness.

Nevada remains the dirtiest state west of the Mississippi, and second to dead last South Carolina, in the American State Litter Scorecard. Other dirty states include Indiana, Georgia, Wyoming, Michigan and New Mexico.
